Early post-operative intervention with the use of Low Level Laser Therapy, like K-Laser treatment, is shown to reduce the formation of scar tissue from a haphazard, non-linear, mess to return to a more natural linear pattern thereby creating a better clinical outcome! And the bonus is that K-Laser also reduces inflammation leading to a faster recovery and a better prognosis.

How do I recover post-op?
Let’s talk about I can help you to recover quickly and get back to day to day life after your orthopaedic operation – especially the most common operations, knee and hip replacements.

Surgical navigation routes often cut muscles and tendons in order to gain access to replace dysfunctional joints. The bones themselves are then cut to insert the new artificial joint structures and, due to this, inflammation and scar tissue are the most common consequences of invasive surgical interventions.

Scar tissue is strong but even less elastic than the original tissue fibres and post-operative inflammation sensitises localised nerve endings, causing pain, and increases pressure on local structures leading to an initial decease in a joint’s range of motion.

How does K-Laser help?
Post surgery K-Laser treatments don’t do anything to the body that the body doesn’t naturally do – it works in a natural way leading to quicker repair. By enhancing the supply of oxygenated blood and nutrients and the removal of waste products, the laser’s light interacts with the mitochondria within cells and accelerates their production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) for a faster cellular recovery. Muscles, tendons AND bones heal faster… !

When do I start my treatments with K-Laser?
So why wait until scar tissue permanently forms after an operation? The scar tissue’s dense, fibrous connective tissue is less elastic than the original tissue and will have a disrupted blood supply – it ought to be sorted quickly. Left unchecked, the scar tissue can feel permanently stiffer, reducing mobility and creating pain in the long term… plus a slower recovery may lead to weaker muscles – it’s better to recover as soon as possible to keep your strength up.

Muscular atrophy (muscle wasting) can begin very quickly after a hip operation, with significant loss of muscle strength and mass occurring within the first 2 to 6 days of hospitalisation. Studies show that 4 to 7 days of reduced physical activity or bed rest after surgery leads to a roughly 2% to 6% decrease in leg muscle mass and up to 22% loss in leg strength.

Will K-Laser affect my artificial joint?
In short, no. Previous orthopaedic therapeutic ultrasounds treatments did affect the artificial joint however, K-Laser does not heat the metal up and is a very safe way of facilitating post-operative repair and recovery.

Combi treatments for post-operative surgery
Depending on a patient’s assessment during consultation, I often use combination treatments effectively on many conditions. Post-operative work may well include lymphatic drainage massage techniques, for example, to reduce inflammation.
My services also include medical acupuncture, osteopathy, sports massage, as all contribute in hastening a patient’s recovery! Combining treatments works so effectively because the intention is to stimulate various biochemical reactions in the body to enhance the potential of a strong healing response.
Does a Combi treatment cost more?
No, I just charge a flat fee of £55 for a 40 minute appointment and I will check for your consent each time about which therapy I will be using and why. See K-Laser costs.
In addition, I often suggest that a combination course of medical acupuncture and K-Laser might be more suitable for recovery, especially for post-operative rehabilitation. These appointments are simply 20 minutes long, two a week, for 3-6 weeks and cost as little as £27.50 each.
We just want to choose the best methods to get you moving more comfortably and to speed up your recovery. We can chat about how to do that and come up with a plan together in your first consultation.
