What is Traditional Acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine that originated in China over 3000 years ago, respecting the five element theory, that principally aims at addressing the root cause of an ailment ('pathogenic factor') to:

Enhance the body’s ability to recover from symptoms
Reduce pain and aid sleep
Create more ease and less anxiety
Facilitate a positive outlook and sense of well-being

Acupuncturists can also use other acupuncture styles in collaboration with western medicine and Samuel may instead decide to use a more modern style of acupuncture, known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to treat specific ailments in his clinic. For example, for orthopaedic injuries and conditions, he often uses a more western influenced medical acupuncture style.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was developed after the cultural revolution in China in the 1960s and is a reinvention of much older acupuncture styles, like Five Elements acupuncture which Sam also utilises. By adhering to various treatment protocols, it encourages the body, mind, and spirit to heal naturally by addressing the root cause of current problems or by strengthening potential weaknesses. This is an important principle of TCM because it deals with the underlying cause of problems and potentially prevents those symptoms from recurring. Sam has successfully used TCM to treat the following:

Addiction issues
Stress reduction
Menstrual and menopausal issues

By seeking to balance the mind, the body, and the spirit, TCM not only treats specific conditions but can also be potentially used as a holistic preventative medical intervention to promote good health and general well-being.

What happens during Acupuncture treatments?

At the initial consultation, a full health history and details of current symptoms is taken as well as identifying your emotional make-up and your strengths and weaknesses. Diagnosis often involves taking your pulses and may also involve checking the colour of your tongue.

Following the consultation, a diagnosis and treatment strategy is devised and various acupuncture points are chosen and needled to ease the patient’s symptoms. The needles are single-use and disposable medical grade needles and are much finer than patients experience when receiving injections by hypodermic needles (e.g. vaccination needles). As such, there is less pain on insertion and very often there is no bleeding after they are removed. Sam has very sound anatomical knowledge and is very particular about clinical safety and cleanliness.

Length of course and frequency of treatments usually depends on your condition but benefit is usually felt within five treatments and an acupuncturist may wish to see you weekly at the start of a course of treatments. Whilst medical acupuncture aims to resolve orthopaedic conditions and ailments, Chinese acupuncture seeks to influence biorhythms and constitutional health. Your acupuncturist will discuss which is best for you during your initial consultation.
